On Data and Design Meetup #23 Online, March 9th, 2023 What do we know about an issue? What is actually knowledge compared to actual practice? Shedroff's theory states that data leads to information, information leads to knowledge, and knowledge leads to wisdom of an individual. What role does visualization play in this? How can visualizations lead to new knowledge? In what ways can we create knowledge? We explore the question of whether visualizing knowledge could be the key to faster understanding, inclusion and a new form of learning and discussion. Let's visualize the given and the imagined to create knowledge for the future. Valentina D'Efilippo (🤍 a London-based designer, illustrator and creative director. Whose work has been part of the permanent collection of Austria's largest anthropological museum, the Weltmuseum Wien, and her book "The Infographic History of the World" has been translated into nine languages. Valentina will talk about her latest projects and her experiences with illustrating history and human development through data visualization and infographic storytelling. Unpacking Practitioners’ Attitudes Towards Codifications of Design Knowledge for Voice User Interfaces Krishika Haresh Khemani, Stuart Reeves CHI'22: ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems Session: Voice, Conversation and Design Abstract Recent HCI research has sought to develop guidelines—‘heuristics’, ‘best practices’, ‘principles’ and so on—for voice user interfaces (VUI) to aid both practitioners and researchers in improving the quality of VUI-based design. However, limited research is available on how such design knowledge is conceptualised and used by industry practitioners. We present a small interview-based study conducted with 9 experienced VUI industry practitioners. Their concerns range from terminological challenges associated with VUI design knowledge, the role of codifications of such knowledge like design guidelines alongside their practical design work, through to their views on the value of ‘harmonisation’ of VUI design knowledge. Given the complex—albeit preliminary—picture that emerges, we argue for HCI’s deeper consideration of how design knowledge meshes with the contingencies of practice, so that VUI design knowledge—such as design guidelines developed in HCI—delivers the most potential value for industry practice. A gate drive circuit in a power electronic system needs to operate reliably on the boundary between low voltage control electronics and the high voltage, high stress power stage. It is subjected to high stress levels and must respond correctly to switching signals with nanosecond timeframes. This is episode 6 of our powerful knowledge series and we discuss gate drive design in some detail including an example of a custom SiC gate drive design running in a 2kW LLC converter with 600V input. #netzero #stemeducation #powerelectronics #knowledgeispower

Learn more at 🤍 There exists a gap between visualization design guidelines and their application in visualization tools. While empirical studies can provide design guidance, we lack a formal framework for representing design knowledge, integrating results across studies, and applying this knowledge in automated design tools that promote effective encodings and facilitate visual exploration. We propose modeling visualization design knowledge as a collection of constraints, in conjunction with a method to learn weights for soft constraints from experimental data. Using constraints, we can take theoretical design knowledge and express it in a concrete, extensible, and testable form: the resulting models can recommend visualization designs and can easily be augmented with additional constraints or updated weights. We implement our approach in Draco, a constraint-based system based on Answer Set Programming (ASP). We demonstrate how to construct increasingly sophisticated automated visualization design systems, including systems based on weights learned directly from the results of graphical perception experiments.

The video discusses stateful and stateless systems. A stateless system relies solely on the input data from each request to generate a response, without storing any state on the server itself.
