Footage of the Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System in various target practicing exercises. The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense (terminal defense or point defense) against anti-ship missiles (AShMs), including high-g and maneuvering sea-skimmers. The basis of the system is the M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon. Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by Navies around the world. The CIWS is designed to be the last line of defense against anti-ship missiles. Due to its design criteria, its effective range is very short relative to the range of modern ASMs, from 1 to 5 nautical miles (9 km). The gun mount moves at a very high speed and with great precision. The system takes minimal inputs from the ship, making it capable of functioning despite potential damage to the ship. Here is why the Phalanx CIWS is so Powerful. The Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled, radar-guided gun that can defeat anti-ship missiles and other close-in threats on land and at sea. At sea, it is designed to defeat anti-ship missiles and “close-in” threats that have pierced other lines of defense. On land, as part of the U.S. Army’s counter-rocket, artillery and mortar systems, it detects and destroys incoming rounds. It also helps provide early warning of attacks. The roman victory in the battle of Cynoscephalae ( 197 BC ) marked the end of the second macedonian war between Rome and Philip V, king of Macedon. The battle is considered one of the best examples of manipular roman legion superiority over the macedonian phalanx in terms of flexibility and combat maneuvering. The reconstruction of the battle is based on Polybius account from Histories, book 18 , 24-27. The MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS - pronounced "sea-whiz") is a fast-reaction, rapid-fire 20-millimeter gun system that provides US Navy ships with a terminal defense against anti-ship missiles that have penetrated other fleet defenses. Designed to engage anti-ship cruise missiles and fixed-wing aircraft at short range, Phalanx automatically engages functions usually performed by separate, independent systems such as search, detection, threat evaluation, acquisition, track, firing, target destruction, and ceasefire. CIWS has been a mainstay self-defense system aboard nearly every class of ship since the late 70s. It was originally designed to defeat low-altitude anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs). As anti-ship cruise missiles became more complex in maneuvers and ability to be detected, and warfare areas moved from the open ocean to littoral environments, CIWS has evolved to meet the threat. The Phalanx is a necessity for U.S. naval ships to enter disputed seas or seas with a U.S. adversary conducting “Anti-access/area denial” (A2/AD) operations within the territory. A2/AD is an increasing issue in areas such as the South China Sea and the Baltic territories. Without systems such as the Phalanx, U.S. naval vessels would be vulnerable to cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, or aerial attacks. Having the capability to shoot down incoming threats can give U.S. sailors confidence to maintain the balance of power on the sea. How did the Macedonian phalanx differ from the traditional Greek phalanx, and why did the Roman maniple defeat it?
Type 45 destroyer HMS DEFENDER has been continuing her sea trials this week, testing the Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS). This short video shows the ship practicing a towed-target exercise with a Falcon aircraft. The aircraft towed a small target on a very long cable as it flew over the ship, which the Phalanx then shot down. The development of the Phalanx CIWS began in the early 1970s, with General Dynamics being awarded the contract for its production. The first prototype system was offered to the U.S. Navy for evaluation on the destroyer leader USS King in 1973 and it was determined that further work was required to improve performance and reliability. The first ship fully fitted out was the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea in 1980. Since its introduction, the Phalanx CIWS has been continually updated and refined to address evolving threats and incorporate new technologies. The last upgrade Block 1B guns employ an electro-optical sighting system and offer anti-air and anti-surface capabilities not present in Blocks 0 through 1A. Block 1B systems can be linked with the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) or SeaRAM systems. At the core of the Phalanx CIWS lies the M61 Vulcan, a six-barreled, 20mm rotary cannon capable of firing at a rate of 3,000 to 4,500 rounds per minute. The ammunition handling system has two conveyor belt systems. The first takes the rounds out of the magazine drum to the gun; the second takes empty shells or unfired rounds to the opposite end of the drum. The CIWS employs a duo of radar antennas that collaborate to target potential threats. The search antenna, housed within the radome atop the weapon control group's white-painted section, supplies the CIWS computer with data on the bearing, range, velocity, heading, and altitude of detected objects. Ancient Rome was originally an Italic settlement dating from the 8th century BC that grew into the city of Rome and which subsequently gave its name to the empire over which it ruled and to the widespread civilisation the empire developed. The Roman empire expanded to become one of the largest empires in the ancient world, though still ruled from the city, with an estimated 50 to 90 million inhabitants and covering 5.0 million square kilometres at its height in AD 117. Ancient Roman civilisation has contributed to modern government, law, politics, engineering, art, literature, architecture, technology, warfare, religion, language and society. Rome professionalised and expanded its military and created a system of government called res publica, the inspiration for modern republics such as the United States and France. It achieved impressive technological and architectural feats, such as the construction of an extensive system of aqueducts and roads, as well as the construction of large monuments, palaces, and public facilities. By the end of the Republic (27 BC), Rome had conquered the lands around the Mediterranean and beyond: its domain extended from the Atlantic to Arabia and from the mouth of the Rhine to North Africa. The Roman Empire emerged with the end of the Republic and the dictatorship of Augustus Caesar. 721 years of Roman-Persian Wars started in 92 BC with their first war against Parthia. It would become the longest conflict in human history, and have major lasting effects and consequences for both empires. Under Trajan, the Empire reached its territorial peak. Republican mores and traditions started to decline during the imperial period, with civil wars becoming a prelude common to the rise of a new emperor. Hoplites are probably one of the first things that come to mind when one thinks of “Ancient Greece”. Equipped with a bronze spear and wearing bronze armor or a linothorax, and hefting the aspis—the hoplite’s bronze shield—they fought in phalanxes. The classic mode of fighting in this formation was the “othismos”, the push, with the aim being to disrupt the enemy phalanx and break their formation. But, over the past few decades, views on hoplite warfare have been called into question and seriously revised, because there are problems in the source material. So, what are these problems, and how do historians of Ancient Greece understand hoplite warfare?

Full run of Phalanx on the hardest difficulty (Funny Mode), my final score was 7,054,980 points. This was captured off a real SNES console playing the real cartridge, no emulation. Warning: this playthrough has HEAVY point milking (around 40 minutes against the stage 7 boss) so I advise you to skip that part. 0:00:00 - Start 0:00:28 - Stage 1 - Assault 0:06:48 - Stage 2 - Under Water 0:15:46 - Stage 3 - Bio Cave 0:21:57 - Stage 4 - Deep Core 0:30:26 - Stage 5 - Destroyer 0:38:32 - Stage 6 - Advertise Area 0:43:13 - Stage 7 - Hyper Space 0:49:30 - Stage 7 - Excessive point farming 1:27:45 - Stage 8 - Charge / Last Mission 1:39:31 - Final Boss + Ending This game is pretty generous with extends, and you will probably need them as deaths are plentiful on this difficulty. You can get around 30 lives (it's capped at 30 if you never die) if you point farm, which I did extensively in this playthrough. Just to note, the stage 7 point farming wasn't really a factor in my clearing the game or not as I'd still have 3~4 lives left even without the farming.
