As part of the KRAUT AM EBERTPLATZ concert series we hosted in Cologne in summer 2019, we played a concert with the legendary Damo Suzuki, singer of Krautrock pioneers CAN. It was a magical experience. We only met Damo about an hour before the concert started, so everything was completely improvised. These are the final minutes of the concert. ► Subscribe to Red Bull Music Academy: 🤍 Krautrock is a broad, catchall genre that encompasses the many permutations of experimental rock music created by German bands in the ’70s. But one of krautrock’s greatest ironies is that the lead singer for one of the genre’s leading bands was born in Japan. Damo Suzuki discussed his philosophy on what he calls “instant composing,” the importance of spirituality in making music and his Never Ending Tour in his RBMA Berlin 2018 lecture. ► 🤍 #DamoSuzuki #musiccomposer #RedBullMusicAcademy Vocalist and musician Damo Suzuki left home in his late teens and began busking around Europe. During one streetside performances, he attracted the attention of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, the bassist and drummer for the band Can. Suzuki became the lead vocalist for Can from 1970 to 1973, writing and singing on the band’s most enduring albums, including Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days. Praised for their fusion of psychedelic rock, funk, and avant-garde noise, as well as Suzuki’s freeform, multilingual, and often improvisational lyrics, these albums went on to influence members of bands like the Sex Pistols, Jesus & Mary Chain and Radiohead. Though Suzuki stopped making music altogether for several years, he returned in 1983 to front Damo Suzuki’s Network, under which he travels the world to improvise and record with local bands. His 2018 album with German experimental band Jelly Planet explores the limits of krautrock while affirming his status as a genre legend. Can was a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne in 1968 by the core quartet of Holger Czukay (bass, tape editing), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Michael Karoli (guitar), and Jaki Liebezeit (drums). The group cycled through several vocalists, most prominently the American-born Malcolm Mooney (1968–70) and the Japanese-born Damo Suzuki (1970–73), as well as various temporary members. Coming from backgrounds in the avant-garde and jazz, the members of Can blended elements of psychedelic rock, funk, and noise on influential albums such as Tago Mago (1971), Ege Bamyasi (1972) and Future Days (1973). Can also had occasional commercial success, with singles such as "Spoon" and "I Want More" reaching national singles charts. They have been widely hailed as pioneers of the German krautrock scene, and a considerable influence on subsequent rock, post-punk, ambient, and electronic music.

PRESALE STARTS NOW: 12 inch 180 g black vinyl 🤍klangschutz.com RECORD RELEASE SHOW 12th APRIL 2023 at RHIZ VIENNA 🤍rhiz.wien In 1973 metaphysical transporter and singer DAMO SUZUKI left the legendary experimental rock band CAN, to which he gave his voice and energy for some of the bands most ground breaking music albums and eclectic live shows. Going on pilgrimage and a journey for mystic exploration that still lasts on until today, Mr. Suzuki then started his own live music project: The DAMO SUZUKI NETWORK, traveling the world to perform completely improvised live shows together with primarily young and unknown musicians from local psychedelic underground scenes. And what band could be more underground than HALF BAKED CHEESE, the viennese heavy rock phenomenon doomed to haunt some of the countries wildest events and supported bands such as Church of Misery, Heckspoiler, Hypnotic Floor, Karaba and many others? Together with the additional local sound carriers Lorenz Kainz and Matthias Kampf all of them performed a completely improvised happening on November 15th 2019, the whole show got preserved on 12 inch vinyl by Klangschutz Schallplatten. The fourth film covers the origins, Zeitgeist, and trajectory of the pioneering German progressive music bands of the 70s emerging from the Hamburg/Düsseldorf/Cologne region, and its influence on contemporary bands. Developed in Germany in the late 60s and early 70s, and largely divorced from the traditional rock influences of British and American bands, the so-called Krautrock genre contributed to the evolution of electronic music, techno and hip hop, ambient music, minimalism and avant-garde.
